With the world in the midst of an economic recession, the concept of abundance is on our minds.

This year's Stewardship theme, "Sharing God's Abundance," reminds us that God has called us to a life of spiritual, rather than material, abundance. We trust that God will give us what we need so that we can focus on the grander pursuits of loving God and our neighbors, leading to joy far exceeding the worth of our secular possessions: And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work (2 Corinthians 9:8).

As in the loaves and fishes story, faithful contributions produce an abundant yield. Pledging to Saint Michael and All Angels funds not merely our clergy, staff, and basic operating expenses, but also the numerous programs — mission and outreach, child and youth development, music and worship, adult formation, and pastoral care — that allow us to extend God's work in the world. When we share our resources with the Church, great things happen — God's love is multiplied.

During this Stewardship season, let us reflect on our gifts from God, including our rich spiritual life at Saint Michael and All Angels. Then let us prayerfully pledge for 2010. When each of us responds to God's call, we will produce an abundant yield.
