| · The power of the world always works in circles. · The center of the universe is everywhere. · Two of the most important elements in Lakota Sioux life are children and the Sacred Circle. |
||
We had the chance to be involved with both children and a Sacred Circle this year during our time on the Rosebud Reservation. We were there during the Niobrara Convention. We attended the Convention (Pow Wow) and participated in the Closing Circle. We explored the Lakota Sioux culture and the environment on the reservation. We engaged in a two‐day work project at one of the local communities. The Episcopal Church in South Dakota is a sacred circle gathered around Jesus in prayer, loving and serving God and our neighbor in Jesus' name.
This is a trip where new friendships are made, rewarding labor is performed and doors are opened to a deeper more fulfilling spiritual life.
The Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation is located in south central South Dakota on the South Dakota/Nebraska state line. It is home to some 21,250 members of the Sicangu (Brule or Burnt Thigh) band of the Lakota or Teton Sioux.
General Information:
Estimated Cost: $400 per person (plus transportation). Discretionary personal spending budget of approximately $100 per person not included.
Lodging: Accommodations are spartan. We will stay on the reservation in either the Noah Brokenleg House or the Bishop Hare Center. Rooms are small with bunk beds.
Meals: The Bishop Hare Center has a kitchen where we will prepare most of our meals.
Travel Arrangements: Fly into Rapid City, SD, and rent vans. Drive through the Black Hills and the Badlands of SD to the town of Mission, SD, climbing the Crazy Horse Monument and visiting the Wounded Knee massacre site on the way. Return to Rapid City for flight home possibly visiting Bear Butte depending upon flight times. Alternatively, quite a few hardy souls drive to Rosebud each summer. The one way trip takes approximately 15 hours.
