Traveling the Beatitudes: A Lenten Pilgrimage to Bolivia
Mar 24 – Apr 1 all-day

The Amistad Pilgrimage is set to leave on March 24, 2017 for a week of fun and fellowship with the children of Casa Esperanza at Amistad Mission followed by a tour of the Jesuit missions in and around Santa Cruz, Bolivia. The focus of the trip this year is a Lenten week of service and reflection with The Beatitudes from Matthew as our anchor for the week.  Each day, we will consider a new Beatitude and reflect on its meaning for our lives and the lives of those around us.  The Lenten pilgrimage is an opportunity for each of us to go deeper in our relationships with each other, with God, and with our distant neighbors in Bolivia.  Though Bolivia is a Spanish speaking country, there is no requirement for you to speak Spanish.  We will have bilingual guides with us during our trip.

Pilgrimage Schedule

IMG_0184The trip is set to leave on March 24, 2017 from the Dallas-Ft.Worth International Airport.  The group will spend 4-5 days in Cochabamba, Bolivia at Amistad Mission, an orphanage caring for children without immediate family in the country.

At the end of the week in Bolivia, we will journey back to Santa Cruz for a tour of a World Heritage Cultural site.  The Jesuit Missions to the Chiquitos were founded between 1696 and 1760.  These sites, now threatened because of changed laws in Bolivia, are a representation of the combination of traditional church architecture from Europe and the architecture of the native peoples of Bolivia.  The tour of the missions will offer us new insights into the ways that Christianity has impacted the lives of native peoples in South America and how native peoples influenced Christian architecture and worship.

Unlike other Jesuit missions in South America, the missions in Bolivia survived the expulsion of the Society of Jesus in 1767.  There are six missions that remain intact – San Francisco Javier, Concepcion, Santa Ana, San Miguel, San Rafael, and San Jose.

On Sunday, we will return to the United States with an evening arrival in Dallas.

Cost per missioner:  $2,300

Important Dates to Remember:

Deadline to Pay Balance/Missioner Paperwork:  March 15, 2017

Health and Travel Information:

Travel to Bolivia involves getting travel immunizations and dealing with high altitudes.  The recommended immunizations can be found on the CDC website.  Please consult your physician about altitude sickness prior to traveling to Bolivia. For more information, please read the missioner’s travel guide to Amistad Mission.
