Camino Day 6: The Love We Gave
Day 6: The Love We Gave
By Leslie DeCillis
Today we walked through a variety of environments – some sunny, some shady, some open fields, some “Princess Bride“-like woods. The Camino today was cool but not cold, sun-dappled but not hot. Much like life, change and unpredictability are the norm. Adaptability and learning to be tolerant are our challenges. We’ve noted also that total distance doesn’t take into account all of the hills and valleys either, but neither does life!
Some of us went into a small church called Igrexe de Santiago de Boente. There was a plaque commemorating the victims of COVID, which made us realize how lucky we are to be alive and well enough to walk this path.
The plaque contained this quote from San Juan De la Cruz, which speaks to our spiritual journey on this trip: “Al atardecer de la vida nos examinarán del amor” – “As life sunsets, we will be examined for the love we gave”.
So while we were tired we persevered and still found time to appreciate the beauty, savor the moment, and forget our fatigue.
We were lifted up by all of those walking with us, and by walking in the footsteps of all prior Pilgrims. We know that God loves us and that all that matters is how we love others.
