Monica Awbrey Named Assistant Choirmaster
I’m delighted to announce the addition of Monica Awbrey to our music staff as Assistant Choirmaster! She will officially begin on August 1, and will do some work with us now to prepare for next year.
Monica is no stranger to Saint Michael, having worked with many in the Dallas area, including currently the Episcopal School of Dallas, a position she will keep while helping us after school hours. She brings a wealth of experience and capability to our growing music program. As indicated by her title, her role will focus on choirs. In particular, she will begin and direct the expansion of our chorister program for children in Kindergarten through Second Grade by starting a new choir for these ages. Additionally, she will work with our already established chorister program, which is grades 3-8 with future plans to expand through high school, and our adult choir. Monica’s presence will also allow greater opportunities for our involvement with music education within our entire parish, such as during the 10 a.m. formation time on Sunday (which is currently impossible).
We are so excited for the wonderful contributions Monica will make to our church’s music, and in particular, for the young families our prepatory choir of K-2 children will engage! So if you have children who will be in K-8 in the fall, we want to hear from you! Contact Julia Beckel, Music Administrator, for how you can be involved at [email protected]
Monica Awbrey has been a music specialist at The Episcopal School of Dallas since 2008. Her roles at ESD include directing the middle school choir and serving as the early children music specialist and Coordinator of Sacred for daily chapel at school. Prior to her work at ESD, she was the Interim Choirmaster at Church of the Incarnation in Dallas and choir director at Rowlett High School, Allen High School, Taft High School in San Antonio and Jordan Middle School in San Antonio. Her love of Anglican music was strengthened from 1999 - 2006 when she was sang with the Church of the Incarnation in residence in Wells, Lincoln, Litchfield and Westminster Abbey in England. In addition to her leadership with children’s music, Monica is the director of Cathedral Arts Chorus at St. Matthew’s Cathedral. Working with singers of all ages, you can also find her directing the high school women’s ensemble with Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas. She also serves as a clinician for workshops and festivals throughout the state, including serving as the Primary Voices clinician for Chorister’s Guild. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Choral Music from Trinity University in San Antonio.
