Obituary | Neil Dunning Anderson
Neil Anderson, Neil moved to Dallas with his family where he attended Hillcrest High School. There, he developed lifelong and treasured friendships. Neil’s college destination was Rice Institute (now Rice University) graduating in 1960. Awarded a Rotary Fellowship to the University of Brussels, he spent the next thirteen months honing his French, meeting with international Rotary groups and traveling Europe on an extraordinary adventure cultivating his lifelong love for travel. Returning stateside, Neil matriculated through Harvard Law School where he received his J.D. in 1964. Subsequently, he returned to Dallas to practice law. A Partner with Worsham Forsythe & Wooldridge (now Hunton Andrews Kurth), Neil practiced Corporate and Securities law for 40 years, often negotiating transactions for his clients in New York, the United Kingdom and Libya. Neil married Raguet Worsham in 1973.
In 1992, Neil married Mary Catherine McGinn and for the next 32 years, they enjoyed life together while making memories with their blended and growing family. He was a proud and loving grandfather to ten grandchildren who called him Pop-Pop. Be it world affairs, politics, history, theology or his beloved Texas Rangers, he was the consummate raconteur delighting in spirited conversations with family and friends. His ubiquitous sense of humor bordered on zany at Times. A history scholar with keen intellect and well read bibliophile, Neil was never without a good read. His intellectual pursuits were endless. Quite the communicator and seasoned debater, Neil’s lifetime interests included tennis, golf, bird hunting, sports, travel and music. He was a supporter of both the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Dallas Opera for decades. “Play Ball”, however, were two of his favorite words. He loved the sport, a pleasure instilled in him by his Grandfather Anderson, who first took him to see the 1945 Washington Senators.
In retirement, he often attended Rangers Spring training in Surprise, AZ. Later, MLB network provided him a front row seat. Coronado Island, near San Diego, was Neil’s beloved second home. There he and Mary spent happy times in retirement enjoying coastal living. He was quite content with a book, beach chair, sunscreen and his panoramic view of the Pacific. Neil treasured St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Dallas, a sanctuary where he worshiped, sang in the choir and sat on the Vestry for three years including presiding as Senior Warden in 1990. He was honored to serve as both Assistant and then Chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas. He was a lifetime Rotary member, past President of Dallas Rotary Club and member of various non-profit Boards.
Neil was a caring and principled family man who set an example for all who knew him. His last selfless act was as an organ donor to the UT Southwestern Neurodegenerative Disease Brain Bank, headed by Charles L. White III, MD. It was Neil and Mary’s hope that through his contribution, vital information could be acquired for Parkinson’s and Lewy Body disease research while heightening awareness of UTSW Brain Bank and neuropathology research.
Neil is survived by his wife, Mary McGinn Anderson and children Michael Dunning Anderson (Gianna); William Lang Anderson, Anna Anderson Lammens (Lorenz); Timothy Michael McGinn (Lena); Meghan McGinn Hudgins (David) along with ten grandchildren, Alex, Luca, Annabel, Sebastian, Sarah, Jackson, Brooks, Reid, Owen and Kyle (Rosemary) and niece, Holly Attaway as well as his former wife, Raguet Worsham, mother of Michael, Will and Anna. He is preceded in death by his parents, Blanche and Edward Neil Anderson and brother, Barton Anderson.
Gratitude is extended to his healthcare team, especially his devoted caregiver, Pauline Muzivi. To commemorate his wonderful life, a Celebration of Life (and interment) will be held at St. Michael and All Angels Church on November 1st at 10 a.m. at 8011 Douglas Avenue. The family welcomes all who knew him to join in celebrating the life of a man who was loved deeply and is greatly missed.
