Saint Michael Presents: Magdalen College Choir
Sunday, April 8 at 7 p.m.

The Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford will perform a concert at Saint Michael on Sunday evening, April 8. The first half of their program will evoke the “Journey Into Light – from Lent to Easter”, while their second half will celebrate Oxford’s choral legacy.

The Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford was founded in 1480. Magdalen College was then one of the oldest and largest choral foundations in late-medieval England, and this historic legacy has been preserved and maintained over five centuries. The Choir, which now enjoys an international reputation as one of the finest ensembles in the UK, exists primarily to sing the daily church services in Magdalen College Chapel. They also sing at a number of special occasions throughout the year, including the famous May Day celebrations, an ancient tradition dating back to the 16th century.

Magdalen College Choir has toured Poland, Japan, the USA, Hungary, Italy, Belgium, Holland, Germany and France; concert appearances have included the BBC Proms and Cadogan Hall. The Choir has worked with a number of leading orchestras including the Britten Sinfonia, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. In Oxford, they have collaborated with both composers and musicians to record discs under the Royal Opera House ‘Opus Arte’ label: recordings have included the music of John Ward and Thomas Tomkins with the celebrated viol group, Phantasm, and the work of the renowned composer of sacred music, Matthew Martin. They have won a Gramophone award, and have collaborated with the film composer George Fenton, most notably in Richard Attenborough’s movie, Shadowlands, with the Beatles member Sir Paul McCartney, and on the award-winning soundtrack for the BBC TV series, Blue Planet.

Saint Michael Presents: Washington National Girls Cathedral Choir
Friday, June 15 at 7 p.m.

The Washington National Girls Cathedral Choir, founded in 1997 is currently among few cathedral choirs in the United States with an affiliated school, in the English tradition. The girl trebles, ages 12-18, attend National Cathedral School for girls. They have been heard in radio broadcasts for PRI and have participated in televised Cathedral services and those of national and ecumenical importance such as the memorial service for Princess Diana, the presidential inaugural prayer services, state funerals, the 9/11 prayer service, prayer service for the victims of Hurricane Katrina and, more recently, the Funeral service of Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the Memorial service for Nelson Mandela, and installation of the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church of the United States.

Concert tours have taken the choirs to New York, Sarasota, Tampa, Los Angeles, San Diego, Portland, San Francisco, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Indianapolis, Richmond and Hawaii and just recently to the United Kingdom to visit Ely, Worchester, Lincoln, and St. Paul’s Cathedrals, and Kings College, Cambridge.  The choirs have recorded numerous CD’s including Centennial CelebrationHear the Christmas Angels and Handel’s Messiah, all available through the Cathedral Museum Store.
