Monday nights in June, guest speakers will engage in hot topics and cold beer – complete with Q&A. Pub Theology is open to all who want to explore faith, and not just for current Saint Michael parishioners. See below for our 2020 schedule! The conversation begins at 6:30 p.m.
June 1 - "Christianity and Mental Health" with Ryan Waller
Join us as we kick off Pub Theology 2020 by welcoming Ryan Casey Waller, a licensed psychotherapist and author of the forthcoming book, Depression, Anxiety, and Other Things We Don't Want to Talk About! Waller studied philosophy and religion at the University of Southern California before pursuing a law degree, a masters in theology, and a masters in counseling from Southern Methodist University. He practiced law before turning to a career in ministry, serving in both academic and ecclesial settings. He is now in private practice in Dallas.
June 8 - "Christianity and Pornography" with Dr. Ken Wilgus
Pub Theology continues on Monday, June 8 with Dr. Ken Wilgus, a psychologist who was formerly the Director of Psychology for the Child and Adolescent Department at the Minirth-Meier Clinic in Dallas, Texas! Dr. Wilgus received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and Clinical Internship at Michael Reese Medical Center in Chicago. He received a Masters degree in School Psychology from Trinity University in San Antonio after completing his Bachelor’s degree from Baylor University.
June 15 - "Christianity and Politics" with Bishop Kai Ryan
Pub Theology will meet Bishop Suffragan Kathryn M. Ryan, Regional Bishop in the West Region of the Diocese of Texas, on June 15 to hear about "Christianity and Politics!" Bishop Suffragan Ryan is the Executive for Ministry, overseeing the Commission on Ministry and the ordination process. She is also the Executive for World Mission and chairs the boards of the following diocesan institutions: El Buen Samaritano, St. Stephen's School, and Seminary of the Southwest. Nationally, she serves on the board of Episcopal Relief & Development and on the Disciplinary Board for Bishops.
June 22 - "Christianity and Race" with Father Matthew Burdette and Rector Chris Girata
The last Pub Theology gathering of 2020 will be led by our own Rector Chris Girata and The Reverend Dr. Matthew Burdette, Rector of Saint Christopher's Episcopal Church in Dallas! Rector Burdette previously served at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Dallas, and Saint Ann and the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Brooklyn, NY. Prior to ordained ministry, Matt completed his PhD in theology from the University of Aberdeen, having written about the political eschatologies of Robert W. Jenson and James H. Cone. Matt lives with his wife, Evie. They have two cats and a lot of fun.
